If you’ve booked a family photography session, you might be wondering, “What do we need to do to get ready?” or “How do we make sure our kids cooperate?”

First, take a deep breath, you do not need to have a perfectly planned day or perfectly behaved children for beautiful photos.

As a Fort Worth family photographer serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I want your session to feel relaxed, natural, and fun. My goal is not just to take pretty pictures, but to capture the real connection, laughter, and little moments that make your family yours.

As a mom of three, I completely understand that kids have their own personalities, moods, and plans sometimes. I know getting everyone out the door, dressed, and arriving on time can feel like a lot, but I promise we will work together to make your DFW family photography session an enjoyable experience.

Here are a few tips to help you feel prepared before your session.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

One of the best things you can do before your family session is prepare a few simple things ahead of time.

I recommend bringing a few essentials with you:

  • A hairbrush or comb for any last-minute touch-ups
  • Water bottles, especially during those warm Texas months
  • Non-messy snacks for little ones
  • Baby wipes for sticky hands and faces
  • A favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or comfort item if your child needs something familiar
  • Extra diapers or a change of clothes for babies and toddlers
  • A towel if we are doing a creek, lake, or water location (because yes, some of the best memories happen when kids get to splash and play!)
  • A change of shoes for the entire family

Many of my favorite Fort Worth photography locations and DFW outdoor family photo locations require a little walking through gravel, uneven paths, or areas that can become slippery near water. I always recommend wearing comfortable shoes while we walk and bringing your nicer photo shoes to change into once we get there.

These little things help everyone stay comfortable so we can focus on what really matters, your family.

Plan Around Your Child’s Schedule

If you have little ones, timing can make a huge difference.

Whenever possible, try to plan your day around your child’s nap schedule so they arrive rested and ready to explore. Many of my outdoor Fort Worth family photography sessions happen during golden hour, which may mean adjusting nap time slightly depending on your child’s routine.

If your little one falls asleep on the way to your session, that’s okay! I recommend waking them up when you arrive so they have time to stretch, look around, and get comfortable before we start.

Sometimes kids just need a few minutes to warm up and that’s completely normal.

Please Arrive About 10 Minutes Early

I always recommend arriving about 10 minutes before your scheduled session time.

This gives you a chance to get everyone out of the car, fix hair, adjust outfits, use the restroom, and take a moment before we begin. Rushing in stressed can make the beginning of a session harder for everyone.

A calm start helps create a more relaxed experience.

Your Kids Do Not Have to Be Perfect

I want you to remember this: your kids do not have to sit still and smile the entire time.

Actually, I don’t expect them to.

Kids are curious, energetic, and full of personality. That is exactly what makes your family unique!

Some of my favorite images happen when kids are running, laughing, cuddling with their parents, showing off their silly side, or simply being themselves.

Those are the moments you will look back on years from now and think, “That was so them.”

You Don’t Have to Worry About Posing

One of the biggest reasons families tell me they feel nervous before photos is because they don’t know what to do.

The good news? You don’t have to.

That is why you hired me!

I will guide you through the entire session with natural prompts, movement, and little games that help your family interact instead of feeling stiff or posed.

We might walk together, tell jokes, snuggle, play, or have your kids race into your arms. These little moments create genuine smiles and real emotions.

Let’s Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

Every family session is different, and that is what makes it special.

If we need to stop for a snack break, we will.

If your toddler wants to be held, that’s okay.

If siblings need a minute, we’ll take it.

Some of the sweetest photos happen in those small moments between the planned poses.

My goal as your Fort Worth family photographer is to capture your family exactly as you are in this season of life, the giggles, the hugs, the little hands holding yours, and all the love in between.

Enjoy the Experience

The best thing you can do during your session is simply enjoy your family.

Your children will only be this little for a short time. Their personalities will change, their little hands will grow, and these everyday moments will become memories.

So instead of worrying about whether everyone is smiling perfectly, focus on laughing with your kids, holding your babies close, and soaking in this season.

I have photographed families throughout Fort Worth, Keller, Haslet, Saginaw and the surrounding DFW area, and I can promise you that no two sessions are ever the same and that is what makes them beautiful.

If you are looking for a Fort Worth family photographer, Dallas family photographer, or DFW family photographer who creates natural, timeless, and meaningful images, I would love the opportunity to capture your family’s story.

Let’s create memories you can look back on for years to come.
